Welcome to the wiki for the UCSC Backpacking Club!

The original website is here, but this wiki will serve as a place to collect and post general information that will be useful TO the club, information like where we've gone, what we've discovered about these places, how to get permits, etc. Maybe this information, this collection of our experiences, will be useful to those outside the club, too!

SummerTrips is a page for all the folks interested in working out something for the summer! Jot down places you want to go, where you currently live, and when you're free, and hopefully trips will evolve from that. This is a WIKI so you need to edit this page yourselves! (Ask Kathleen about wikis if you're curious.) The password for editing the wiki is in the email I sent out about summer trips.

Stuff Kathleen was working on, but then they went and happended (and were awesome!): The Sierras and Sykes Hot Springs

Check out upcoming trips on the sidebar for more details.

Meetings: Thursday Nights at 9pm, on campus, upstairs at OPERS East Field House in the conference room.

About The Club Itself:

Who We Are: We are mostly students here at UCSC with a interest (or curiousity) about backpacking! Any student is welcome to check out meetings, though it's open to the community. The current club leaders are Kathleen and Chelsea, though we're both graduating soon.

What We Do: We plan trips, then we go on them. No gear or experience necessary, although both are totally welcome and helpful.

Other Stuff We Do: We also take day hikes, hold social events, occasionally read books and most importantly, have too much fun to handle!

Where: Our meetings are on campus and our trips are where ever we can get to in California! Usually they're close by (Big Basin, Big Sur, Point Reyes) but we've made it to the Lost Coast and Death Valley, too!

When: Trip and event dates are scheduled during meetings and vary from quarter to quarter. Every quarter includes two trips, one easy/beginner level, one harder/advanced (at times pretty gnarly).

Why: If you have never been backpacking, it is one of the most radical experiences humanity has to enjoy. It is a great way to get in shape, get to know new people, explore breathtakingly beautiful places, learn about the wilderness (and yourself), have adventures, learn outdoors skills, see cool wildlife, and take a break from the whole campus-school thing. If you have gone backpacking before, you already know.
